Chinese Tang Dynasty Paint Pottery Fat Lady , 800 AD (Z877)
This is an exquisite and beautifully modeled "fat lady" (court Lady) with elaborate head dress, her hands clenched in front under the robes, dating to the Tang Dynasty over 1,100 years ago. Today these would not be referred to as fat, but maybe plump, fat being a name coined in the early 20th century to describe the preferred appearance of women in the Tang dynasty. Fat ladies have always commanded a significant monetary premium over other ladies of the period. Miller's Chinese and Japanese Antiques Buyer's Guide illustrates a similar sized example offered by Sotheby's, New York, with a price estimate of 7,000 to 7,700 pounds (Approximately $US12,600 to $US13,860).
